Top Shooter: Maverick Director Joseph Kosinski recently revealed that the crew had filmed 800 hours to make the 1986 sequel to the film. Best shooter. In the original film, Tom Cruise plays Lieutenant Pete «Maverick» Mitchell, a hard-boiled naval aviator who is given the opportunity to train at the US Navy Fighter Weapons School. Cruise will reprise his role in the sequel alongside Val Kilmer as Admiral Tom «Iceman» Kazansky.
In a new interview with Empire, Kosinski spoke about the challenges of filming a film filled with extreme stunts. “Out of a 12- or 14-hour day, you can get 30 seconds of good footage. But it was so hard earned. It just took a very long time to get it all. Months and months of aerial filming,” Kosinski said. “We filmed as much material as three Lord of the Rings films combined. I think it was 800 hours of footage.»
