In 1986, Tony Scott’s action movie came out. Best shooter flocked to the theatres. We’ve been blown away by the Marine Pilots in dogfight with rising superstar Tom Cruise as Pete «Maverick» Mitchell. 36 years later, it’s time for fans of this cult classic to hit the highway into the danger zone to see Top Shooter: Maverick, the long-awaited sequel with Joseph Kosinski in the director’s chair. This is Kosinski’s second sequel to the 80s classic after Tron: Legacythis is his second time working with Cruz after oblivionand his second work with Miles Teller and Jennifer Connelly after Only the brave.
In this film, Kosinski combines the best parts of his previous filmography to create an amazing extravagant sequel that transcends the original. While the original film captured the 80s in a bottle, Top Shooter: Maverick captures everything that should be in a modern blockbuster. It’s one of the most impressive, breathtaking films of the year that doesn’t include superheroes and a grand CGI spectacle. It pays homage to the heritage of the original and creates something new. In addition, this movie is a testament to Cruise’s star power and his commitment to entertainment.
Cruz has proven his prowess as an action hero in franchises such as Mission impossible and Jack Richer. Deadly stunts such as the HALO jump and the Burj Khalifa climb have earned Cruise a well-deserved movie star status. Of course, that’s part of what makes it so good to see him return to one of the roles that launched his career. Seeing him don a bomber jacket and aviator sunglasses when Maverick is sure to bring a smile to the faces of longtime Best shooter fans. He returns to the shoes of a tough pilot who does not play by the rules with superiority, and also turns the character into a leader.
You come to the cinema like Top Shooter: Maverick for action. Luckily for us, Cruz dedicates himself entirely to dogfight scenes. There is no other movie in Hollywood with such exciting and practical action as this one. Cruz has done extensive training for himself and all his colleagues to fly a real aircraft and create breathtaking realistic action sequences. The dogfights are so exciting that it’s no wonder why the release of this movie was delayed by almost three years. The flight scenes are so visually breathtaking that they can only be seen in the largest movie theater with the loudest sound available.
But buying a ticket for this film, you will not just get a phenomenal action movie. You will get an emotional story about an old-fashioned aviator who returns to his roots to train a new generation of aviators. Watching Maverick’s role reversal leads to a fun dynamic as he maintains his unconventional methods while also emphasizing that there is no room for error. He repeats his line from the original film: «You think up there, you’re dead.» This film captures the excitement and thrill of air combat, showing its dangers and how battles have evolved since the 80s.
It is also a very emotional film. Maverick must train a group of aviators, one of which is Rooster (Miles Teller), the son of Maverick’s late best friend, Goose. Their relationship is the heart and soul of the film, leading to very emotional scenes. This is more than just an action movie – at the heart of everything is a drama with mature characters. Events of the original Best shooter serve as Maverick’s backbone, and the places the characters occupy in the script bring tears to their eyes. The film’s team of young characters is also a joy to watch as they train to become better pilots.
It all culminates in a tense final battle that steps up from the original. It’s a welcome entry in Cruise’s long list of fantasy action movies. This sequel is a marvelous labor of love that doesn’t enter into a new, unpredictable story with its own story. However, this film offers thrilling action, phenomenal dramatic weight from stellar performers, and an experience tailored specifically for anyone who feels the need – the need for speed.
As explained in ComingSoon’s review policy, 9 points equals «excellent». Entertainment that reaches this level is at the top of its class. The gold standard that every creator aspires to.
