The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent Review: Nic Cage Wows

Cell. Nicolas Cage. The final scene of his 1997 action film. Con Air plays on the TV screen while teenage girl Maria (Kathryn Vankova) watches, commenting on how incredible he is. This serves as the opening scene The Unbearable Weight of a Huge Talent, an action comedy starring Nicolas Cage as an exaggerated, neurotic version of himself. In debt and losing movie roles left and right, Cage accepts a $1 million offer to attend a billionaire superfan’s Nic Cage movie birthday party to end all Nic Cage movies.

There is no easier way to praise this film than to say that it is incredible and lives up to every expectation and desire. The premise itself is enough to make people sit down: watching a Hollywood legend with a cult following play himself in an outrageous comedy. This type of movie wouldn’t be so funny if some other celebrity was at the center of this chilling idea. Not surprisingly, Cage turned down the role several times before accepting it. Luckily, he changed his mind after a personal letter from writer/director Tom Gormican, as it’s one of the most outrageously entertaining films we’ve seen in years, and a fantastic return to form for a mid-budget theatrical comedy.

In the film, Cage is in debt, living in a hotel, and losing his role in a David Gordon Green film after performing an embarrassing monologue in a thick Boston accent. As Cage struggles to connect with his family and decides to give up and retire, he agrees to fly to Mallorca to spend time with Javi (Pedro Pascal) on his birthday. The first act setting is consistently funny as we hear Cage’s angelic singing voice and also imagine him as a character struggling with a lot.

As Cage gets closer to Xavi, the second act turns into a series of fun and games that are a pleasure to watch. Cage and Xavi are the perfect duo, as Cage gets annoyed with him at first, but grows closer to him as they discover their shared love for films like Doctor Caligari’s office. The friendship they share becomes one of the most touching parts of the movie as we feel the perfect chemistry between Cage and Pascal. Together they work wonders as two incompatible personalities whose mission is to write a grounded and dramatic script together.

As mentioned in this film, the script needs a hook to get the audience to take their seats. This movie has it all in abundance, featuring Vivian (Tiffany Haddish) and Martin (Ike Baringoltz), two CIA agents who need the help of an Oscar-winning playwright to solve a case involving the kidnapping of a politician’s daughter. The story is surprisingly engaging as Cage is pushed into situations for which he is neither trained nor ready. While the plausibility of all this is questionable, it doesn’t matter. Everyone in this film is having a lot of fun, as are the audience watching Cage and Javi take LSD in a sequence that offers non-stop fun.

Few actors are as versatile as Cage. He has played many phenomenal dramatic roles, but his delightfully over the top performance in films such as Vampire Kiss and Throw-in which are more like his character here. This film is tailor-made for his talents, as its comedic pacing translates into sheer performance power. Plus, Pascal is funnier than we’ve ever seen from him, and Haddish and Baringolz reunite after their on-screen couple in Oath for fun dynamics.

Even though it sounds incredible on paper, The Unbearable Weight of a Huge Talent even better than expected. It’s one of the few hilarious Arnold Schwarzenegger meta-comedies we’ve seen lately. The last fighter. With heartbreaking comedy and a well-written story with funny characters, this film is a must-see for Cage fans.
