It probably should have been clear when they hired Akiva Shaffer from The Lonely Island to direct, with Andy Samberg and John Mulaney playing the two lead chipmunks. Chip and Dale: Rescuers the film will be slightly different from the old cartoon show. If earlier it was not clear, then the new trailer leaves no doubt; the movie probably has less to do with the old series, which was a serious animated adventure about a group of animal characters, and more to do with Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
It’s a daring combination of live action and animation, set in a world populated by humans and cartoons, where Rescuers The series has been canceled and Chip and Dale no longer speak. Then they get back together to solve the mystery of the disappearance of the toons. (more shades Roger Rabbit there.)
A movie like this would require episodes from recognizable cartoons, and Disney has a lot to look at. In the new trailer you will see Flounder from the little Mermaid and a surly, middle-aged Peter Pan, voiced by Will Arnett. See who else you spotted in the video below:
Here is the official synopsis of the film:
In Chip ‘n’ Dale: The Rescue, Chip and Dale live among cartoons and people in modern-day Los Angeles, but now their lives are very different. Decades have passed since their successful television series was canceled and Chip (the voice of Mulaney) succumbed to a life of suburban home life as an insurance salesman. Meanwhile, Dale (the voice of Sandburg) has undergone CGI surgery and works at a nostalgic convention, desperate to relive his glory days. When a former castmate mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale must mend their broken friendship and take on the role of lifeguard detectives again to save their friend’s life.
