New member of Spider-Verse: Bad Bunny.
This week at CinemaCon, Sony announced that the next addition to their universe of Spider-Man-inspired films will be El Muerto, probably the most obscure character to date that they have given their solo film to. As marvel.com describes him, the character is a «super strong wrestler» whose powers and mask have been «passed down from generation to generation. Each wrestler had to prove himself to his oppressor, Eldorado, in order to stay alive and preserve his strength.»
And this description alone may provide a clue as to why Bad Bunny would want to play the part; he is a big fan of wrestling and participated in last year’s WrestleMania and this year’s Royal Rumble. In accordance with TermThe idea to make a movie about El Muerto came from the Bad Bunny himself:
After a few recent encounters in which he tried to come up with a star car for him, Multihyphen took matters into his own hands when he started mining Spider-Man. a library for Latin characters that would suit him best, eventually stumbling upon El Muerto. The studio liked the idea and hope the project moves quickly given Bad Bunny’s busy touring and acting schedule.
Deadline also notes that El Muerto will be «the first Latin superhero to get his own movie in the Marvel character universe.» The El Muerto character first appeared in a 2006 issue of the magazine. Friendly Neighbor Spider-Man written by Peter David and illustrated by Roger Cruz. (I expect the price of this issue to rise significantly in the next week or two in comic book stores across the country.)
El Muerto scheduled to open in theaters on January 12, 2024.
