In a recent interview with fandom, screenwriter Pat Casey acknowledged the many «Olive Orchard» jokes in the first film, but said it was not really a matter of legitimate product sponsorship. Instead, the team that made the film just thought it would be fun and kept growing.

“A lot of it wasn’t product placement,” Casey said with a laugh. “The Olive Garden thing… Olive Garden didn’t pay us for it, it was just a joke. It was just a little thing and then when I wasn’t on set it seemed to keep growing, they kept adding more Olive Garden references, I don’t know. The original joke was that the general gives them a crappy gift card at the end, and then it became whole. It was going back to an earlier film.»

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 voice sounds again Parks and recreation areas veterinarian Ben Schwartz as the titular speedster. He is joined by returning actors James Marsden (Western world), Tika Sumpter (ride alone), Natasha Rothwell (Wonder Woman 1984), Adam Pally (Project Mindy) and Jim Carrey (joking).

«By settling in Green Hills, Sonic aims to prove that he has what it takes to become a true hero,» reads the official synopsis. “His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search of an emerald capable of destroying civilizations. Sonic teams up with his buddy Tails and together they go on a trip around the world to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.»

The sequel’s additional cast includes franchise newcomers Shemar Moore, Colleen O’Shaughnessy and Idris Elba, with the latter two slated to respectively voice the roles of Tails and Knuckles.
