In a recent interview with fandom, screenwriter Pat Casey acknowledged the many «Olive Orchard» jokes in the first film, but said it was not really a matter of legitimate product sponsorship. Instead, the team that made the film just thought it would be fun and kept growing.
“A lot of it wasn’t product placement,” Casey said with a laugh. “The Olive Garden thing… Olive Garden didn’t pay us for it, it was just a joke. It was just a little thing and then when I wasn’t on set it seemed to keep growing, they kept adding more Olive Garden references, I don’t know. The original joke was that the general gives them a crappy gift card at the end, and then it became whole. It was going back to an earlier film.»
