The most controversial moment of all Spiderman the movie house is supposed to be a scene in Sam Raimi’s novel. Spiderman 3 where Peter Parker, consumed by the evil energy of his new alien suit, goes bad and…does a big dance number in the street. For many fans, this was the moment when Raimi Spiderman the franchise has jumped the shark and has been endlessly parodied in the years since the film’s premiere, including in others Spiderman movies like In spider verse.
Raimi is doing press for her new movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessand was asked fandom about his intentions regarding the scene and the intense reaction to it. He noted that people who laughed at this scene reacted exactly as expected. As Raimi explained:
Well, actually, we wanted it to be funny. It was Peter Parker’s version – that lame child – of what it was like to be yourself. But he’s so fluffy. He’s so out of his mind that this is his take on it. And the public didn’t like it. But that’s what we were trying to do. So I’m not surprised that people… I’m glad people find it funny! We wanted it to be fun.
Like an avid fan Spiderman 3, that’s something I never understood about the reaction to the scene. People who complain that this is so stupid… supposed be stupid! The whole idea that Peter Parker has a dark side is absurd. He’s Peter Parker! So, of course, his dark side is dumb and innocent and weird.
Sam Raimi is a great director, but he doesn’t make dark, gritty superheroes. And Spiderman 3 came at a time when dark, gritty superheroes were all the rage in films like Batman Begins. Spiderman 3 uses «Venom» to poke fun at the idea of tortured superheroes – and when you look at the sequence that way, it totally works.
Of course, comic book fans aren’t always known for their sense of humor or their willingness to poke fun at their favorite characters. Some fans didn’t like the idea of someone playing pranks on Venom, and there’s no denying that Spiderman 3 and Raimi at that moment were far from the spirit of the times. But Raimi is right; on his own terms, for what he’s trying to do, the scene is deliberately funny.
