Neon has announced the release date for the final installment of David Cronenberg’s sci-fi body horror. Crimes of the future, which will make its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this year for the first time. The film, which stars Viggo Mortensen, Kristen Stewart and Léa Seydoux, is set to hit select theaters in New York and Los Angeles on June 3rd. This will be followed by a wide release in theaters on June 10th.
“Crimes of the future it is a reflection on human evolution. Specifically, the ways we had to take control of the process because we created such a powerful environment that didn’t exist before,» Cronenberg said in a statement. “It’s an evolution of things I’ve done before. Fans will see key references to other scenes and moments from my other films. This is the continuity of my understanding of technology as related to the human body. Technology is always an extension of the human body, even if it seems very mechanical and inhuman…”

“In the film, as the human species adapts to the synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations,” reads the synopsis. “Together with his partner Caprice, Saul Tenser, the famous performance artist, publicly demonstrates the metamorphoses of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin, a researcher at the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, and that’s when the mysterious group is revealed… Their mission is to use Saul’s fame to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.»
The film marks the third collaboration between Cronenberg and Mortensen, after working together on the acclaimed History of violence and Eastern promises. Production took place in Athens, Greece.

Crimes of the future is a co-production between Neon, Serendipity Point Films and Argonauts Productions. The producers are Steve Solomos and Panos Papahadzis of Argonauts, and the executive producers are Joe Iacono, Torsten Schumacher, Peter Touche, Kristel Konan, Aida Tannian, Victor Lowy and Victor Hadida. Bonnie Doe and Laura Lanctrie are also attached as associate producers.
