Monstrous movie review & film summary (2022)

The plot of «Monstrous» develops gradually through prepared revelations that Laura tried to hide. From the phone conversation, we hear that she is avoiding Cody’s father. And we see in a dream reminiscent of a scene from The Creature from the Black Lagoon that Laura is worried about a mysterious brunette (Rachel Adlow).

Both a phone call and a dream invade the world of Laura’s cozy 1950s décor and dreamy pop songs like «I Don’t Wanna Set the World on Fire» and «Mr. White.» Sandman.» She tries to stay in that positive emotional space, even while working at the nearby secretary pool. But Cody has nightmares about the lake monster and, against his mom’s wishes, he doesn’t want to make new friends at school. Laura tries to get some help – by at least with her new home – from the hopeful owner of the property, Mr. Langtry (Don Darrell), but he’s only so helpful.

Ricci puts in a lot of hard work in this sketchy screenplay, written by Caroline Crest and mostly finalized by cinematographer Senda Bonnet, production designer Mars Fiheri and their respective teams. The floral wallpaper and matching yellow refrigerator, shot from attractive wide angles, help the viewer understand the appeal of Laura’s new home. Cody’s relatively claustrophobic visions of a kelpie corpse monster aren’t as inspiring, as they’re too shiny and conceptually subtle to effectively put us in the little guy’s shoes.

But that’s not surprising, since much of Monstrous either touches on or reflects Laura’s point of view. She provides the eye of a needle through which we see the world of the film, which inadvertently makes Ricci’s performance even more remarkable. She brings a vulnerability to her character that is evident even when Laura tries to comfort Cody. And when Laura actually sees something strange in her house moving right off-screen, Ricci’s tightly-blocked look over her shoulder conveys more tension than any of the film’s dialogue or creature effects. However, no one else in the film can match Ricci or her energy. Barnard’s performances are consumed by his pale zombie Romero face, and the only semi-central character who can keep up with Ricci is Lenora (Colleen Camp), Mr. Langtry’s grouchy wife.

Lover of movies and series. rather. lover to the cinema in generating. I hope you like my blog.
