The series, originally announced in September 2020, was slated to star McBride and Norman Reedus. Reedus was to reprise his role as fan-favorite character Daryl Dixon. However, the reason for the sudden departure was not given, so it is not clear why McBride chose not to appear again.
Reddus and McBride both appeared in the first season the walking Dead, and the characters of Daryl and Carol remained throughout the series, surviving various encounters with zombie-like monsters encountered in the series. Along the way, their characters became fan favorites, with fans praising the chemistry that Reedus and McBride had. This chemistry partly led to the development of the spin-off.
A spin-off of Carol/Daryl is just one of many planned series based on the walking Dead, with a spin-off featuring Negan by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Maggie Lauren Cohan also in development. Episodic anthology series Tales of the Walking Deadas well as current Fear the walking deadare also still on the AMC plate in the future.

It is based on the comic book of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard. Kirkman also serves as an executive producer on the series along with Scott M. Gimple, Greg Nicotero, David Alpert, Joseph Incaprera, Gale Ann Hurd and Denise Huth. Angela Kahn also returned as showrunner for the final installment.
