Marvel’s ‘Fantastic Four’ Loses Its Director

When Marvel announced they were making their own Fantastic Four movie on Disney’s Investor Day back in 2020, they didn’t have a cast to promote but they did there is a director: Jon Watts, who has already made two successful Spiderman films with Tom Holland, and later become a director No way homebecame one of the biggest blockbusters in history. This alone gave fans cause for hope after three dubious and frankly terrible previous ones. Fantastic Four movie franchise.

But now Watts is gone, as confirmed by statements from both Watts himself and Marvel. Watts explained (via Term), which makes three Spiderman The films «have been an incredible and life-changing experience for me», and that he is «eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years» and «hopes we can work together again». (Deadline wrote that Watts «needed a breather» after working on Spiderman almost non-stop for the past seven years.)

Here’s what Marvel’s Kevin Feige had to say about Watts’ departure:

We looked forward to continuing our work with him to bring the Fantastic Four into the MCU, but we understand and support his reasons for leaving. We are optimistic that we will have the opportunity to work together again at some point in the future.

Now the search is on for a new director to spearhead what is considered one of Marvel’s biggest franchises, even if previous films including Roger Corman’s doomed project that was never released, two mediocre mid-2000s Fox movies and one disastrous 2015 reboot directed by Josh Trank – did not live up to the box office potential of the concept. It was the first superhero comic created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and is considered one of their signature works as well as the book that started the era of Marvel comics.

Watts already has another project outside of Marvel; film starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt for Apple. What does this all mean for the future? Spiderman franchise is unknown.
