Judd Apatow – producer Very bad was one of the biggest comedy hits of the 2000s, but for a long time people said a sequel would never come out. Judd Apatow disagrees. Despite how well it did both critically and at the box office, most of the original film’s crew and cast turned down a sequel.
Now Apatow has officially responded to this refusal. He has an idea and doesn’t think there’s any reason why it can’t be done. In his interview with Michael Rosenbaum from Inside youhe said
I always wanted them to make a sequel to Superbad. I know Jonah said, «Oh, it’ll be fun to do this when we’re 70 or 80,» but I really wanted them to play «SuperBad» in college, where Jonah drops out of college and just shows up and visits Michael Cera. to college. But everyone was like, «No, we don’t want to ruin Superbad by accidentally making a crappy second one,» and I always said the same thing: «Well, that’s like saying don’t do a second episode of The Sopranos.»
Hill, one of the film’s stars, is known to have fallen on hard times since the film’s release. He was resentful for a long time, being known mainly as «the fat guy from Very bad.» This may explain his reticence towards making a sequel. And Michael Cera, for his part, always felt that a sequel would be more or less unnecessary. A number of other people involved in the project claim that they do not want to spoil the legacy of the original. For this reason, Seth Rogen was especially wary.
For now it’s too late to do Very bad sequel in college, so this will forever be Hollywood’s «what if». You can watch Apatow’s full interview below.
