Is the Zombie Movie Worth Watching?

In a world where many movie snobs are determined to bury the zombie craze around every corner, we still seem to find interesting and funny films in this genre every year, usually from countries other than the US. Wyrmwood: Apocalypse it’s an australian production that has more fresh bodies and a couple of interesting ideas, it’s also a sequel Wyrmwood: Road of the Deadwhich I didn’t know until the movie started. The trailer was enough to sell me without further research, capturing a sense of surreal absurdity and that sense of high after the end of society that continued into the film. No one else should see Wyrmwood first, and now I will definitely look.

We begin to follow Rhys, even if he doesn’t feel like the main character, and become familiar with his routine and smart makeshift bunker setting. During a zombie apocalypse, it’s important to eat well and stay fit, so why not spar with a few of them when they can’t hurt you, or use a couple of dead men on bikes to help start the electricity. This is a great introduction to give us some information without making him feel too important. He appears to be some kind of bounty hunter, capturing others and delivering them to a military group that is supposed to be looking for a cure, and anyone who has seen a few of them can immediately tell that things are about to go south. this soldier.

Rhys has a cool weapon that is often used. He looks like Bane in his full gear and is driving around in a truck full of radiation. The soldier also has a few surprises up his sleeve in case he gets into trouble, showing that he is quite capable of surviving in this dark and terrible version of the world. This particular assignment, however, bringing in someone who is a half-zombie hybrid quickly puts him on a dangerous path when he decides to do the right thing. It’s the introduction of two other characters, but then two more join in to form a whole team of evil ass kickers. Soon it’s an ensemble cast that each has their moments. There’s a weird feeling that these characters needed more time, but some of them were created in the first movie, and it turns out that Rhys had an evil twin brother who was also in that movie. This may sound like a lot, but it’s not hard to keep most of it straight with dialogue.

Most of the acting in the film is well done and the lines feel natural, or at least fit the characters. There are not many jokes here, but a small amount of humor is firmly present in most scenes. All the performers seemed to have a good time when the cameras were rolling, and it shows in the effort they put in. Villains are almost archetypes for the genre, but the passion and over-the-top energy are contagious – easily. hate. I like how the underground part of the base is brightly lit to show the insanity of the Surgeon. It also sets this environment apart from other Australian landscapes and allows some of the scenery to suggest to viewers how far the world has come.

The plot may not be very strong, but there were interesting things in it. Even though the pace was fast, I found myself wanting to build the world more around various topics: how they used zombies for fuel, the logistics of pills and serums, more about the blood vials that kept the hybrids calm, and how some of these weapons and vehicles were made. It doesn’t make up for what’s missing from the main story, but I’m interested in this facility as a series.

Once all the parts are in place, it becomes clear what the third act will be. Up to this point, the film has had some weird tonal shifts, where the world at times seems incredibly serious and abandoned, and at other times it’s funny and a little wacky, but never stupid. For the most part, it stays colored in the lines, but when the final act comes, a lot of that gets thrown out. Hybrid zombies show off their powers, a mad scientist uses a computerized undead champion to fight his battles along with some corny typical villainous music, and an underground facility becomes a carnage right before the inevitable self-destruct scene. It’s all amazingly fun and a little wild, but every moment is at least interesting. For fans of zombies, gore, gore, and ridiculous outcomes, it’s hard to imagine they want anything more.

It was like watching army of the dead if it had a smaller budget with better bad guys and denser world building. My only real problem with Wyrmwood: Apocalypse, if there are, it’s two characters who sacrificed themselves only to reappear at the end for a prank. However, it is an enjoyable film and makes me think that I should watch more Ozploitation films in the future. It won’t change the genre or get rid of zombie fatigue, but there’s a pulse here for those looking to have a good time.

CHECK: 7.5/10

As explained in ComingSoon’s review rules, a score of 7.5 is equivalent to «good». A successful entertainment that is worth a try, but it may not be to everyone’s taste.
