It has been eight years since David Cronenberg’s last film was released in 2014. Maps to the stars and long before he made a truly Cronenberg film, full of his trademarks, such as body horror and strange and unsettling sexuality. But his last Crimes of the future, almost done, and you don’t need to see Cronenberg’s name in the credits to know he did it. No one else would have had such an eerie, unsettling vision.
This first trailer is below, and while it doesn’t explicitly set out the premise, it does show bizarre surgeries, people with body parts and organs where they shouldn’t be, and stars Viggo Mortensen, Lea Seydoux, and Kristen Stewart. What more could you want from a movie?
Cronenberg’s latest film shares the title with one of his the very first works as a screenwriter and director, but this is allegedly not a remake. Check out the trailer below:
Here is the official synopsis of the film:
As the human species adapts to the synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner Caprice (Lea Seydoux), Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), the famous performance artist, publicly demonstrates the metamorphoses of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator with the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, and then a mysterious group is revealed … Their mission is to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.
Crimes of the future opens in US theaters in June after its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month.
