ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke to Lincoln Lawyer stars Becky Newton, Jazz Racol and Angus Sampson on their characters and the series. All 10 episodes of the Netflix adaptation of Michael Connelly’s best-selling crime novel are now available to stream.
«When his former partner in law is murdered, Mickey Haller is left to take over the firm, including a high-profile murder trial,» the synopsis reads. «The biggest case he’s ever had to tackle in the back seat of his Lincoln Town Car, Mickey discovers there may be more at stake than he thought.»
Tyler Treece: Becky, there’s this funny dynamic when Lorna works with her ex-husband, but you’re not in a fight. You still care a lot about each other. What do you like most about this dynamic?
Becky NewtonA: I thought it was unconventional. I think a lot of the times we see on TV, if we really see exes, they often get in trouble and there’s bitterness. I liked the idea that they had a past, they were romantically involved, obviously they were incredibly close. It didn’t work, but the love they have and the support they have for each other remains. This adds some complexity. For example, when she and Cisco come into conflict. I would say that the only thing Lorna fears, if any, is somehow disappointing Mickey or doing something that makes him feel unsupported. So I think it creates a wonderful complexity, but doesn’t create the conflict that we’ve seen before on TV and dare to enter new territory: modern relationships after people are no longer married.
Jazz, I loved your character on the show, and I love the way addiction is handled on this show. You have great speeches about it. What preparation does it take to play a recovering drug addict in Izzy and make sure it’s handled with care?
Jazz RacoleA: Actually a lot. I have spoken to many addicts in the course of my research and have watched many intervention. I really, really wanted to give it credit because it’s such a delicate thing and so many people are suffering from it. Not only the addicts themselves, but also the family that surrounds them. So I really, really wanted to pay tribute. So the preparation for it was interesting. It was heartbreaking and it was very, very, very educational for me. I really like the fact that this is the meeting place of Mickey and Izzy, the fact that their journey is addictive. So it’s really really cool. Ted and David are great at this.

Angus, I love that Cisco is completely turning this badass biker archetype on its head. You are such a savvy investigator, but what is so special about this role that makes it so interesting?
Angus Sampson: I was curious what he didn’t say because no one explained to me why he worked for Mickey, on a level where he could put his ego aside to work for the man who was married to the love of his life. I felt that he must have secrets or stories. There must be something to this… not that he owes Mickey, but he probably does. He probably pulled him out of some unpleasant or delicate situations.
But I think that was the first thing that attracted me. I couldn’t, as a redblood male, certainly as an Australian purebred male, I couldn’t get over the fact that Cisco didn’t say to Lorna, «Come on, we should work somewhere else in all of America… We work for your ex-husband, why ? So, that was kind of a starting point for me.
Becky, I love the main mystery of this show, and I love that it’s on Netflix because that’s the definition of what you can snack on TV. How exciting is it to have this platform and know that people will watch the whole season in one day?
newtonA: I’ve never worked for Netflix before, so I come from the world of network TV. It’s very, very different. I’m so excited to think that people enjoy it so much that they can eat it all at once. I can not wait. I am very, very lucky to be in the world of Netflix.
Jazz, the prep for this show was pretty dramatic and ended up being saved by Netflix. This role took a while to come to fruition, but how exciting was it to finally play this role after all the preparation?
At first, we were supposed to start filming as soon as I got it. We had to start production right away. And then there was a year-long wait. And part of it was in limbo. And at the time, I really had to… I prayed to God that I still had a job, but I really needed to do a lot of research on Izzy and how to develop her and find out what she could do. suggest Mickey? And who is she? And how does this character grow and what is her arc like? So it was exciting. Netflix is amazing, but to be able to film and work, not only with David E. Kelly and Ted to be a part of it, but to be able to work with such an amazing cast and crew was absolutely incredible after such a long period. time.
