Along for the Ride movie review (2022)

Oden wonders, with summer ahead, if now might be the time to see if she can get on with the important part. She chose to stay with her father and stepmother, who live in the coastal town of Colby. At home, according to her, she knows how to behave with only one person. «Maybe if I go to Colby, I can be someone else.»

If you’re hoping that instead she’ll have to be more authentic and that a handsome teenage boy will help her with frequent microdoses of what the subtitles call «melodic indie music», you’ve come. to the right place. If you want more than the first verse of the song, maybe not.

At first, Auden acts like it’s the other day, not thinking about what she wants, just about what she hasn’t done before. But then she meets the good girl game, the equivalent of the legendary «manic pixie dream girl,» which I’ll call «soul faun’s dream boy.» This is Eli (Belmont Cameli in a role conceived as a cross between John Cusack in Say Anything, Heath Ledger in 10 Reasons I Hate You and Moondog in Gidget). He offers to take her on a «quest» to catch up on all the silly fun her no-nonsense mother thought was a waste of time. He is a bit of a loner so she can reunite him with her friends. He is sad and she can make him talk about it. And they give each other a chance to tell a few stories and admit some truths that they didn’t even admit to themselves.

The film gets a boost from Andie MacDowell as Auden’s mother, who shows up on the beach in pastels and seashells in very black. McDowell gives the right, slightly harsh accent to lines such as: «You must forgive me if it bothers me how easily you adjusted to the world of your father’s new wife,» nevertheless letting us know, if not Auden, that this is not so much from -for snobbery, how much for fear of losing her daughter when she leaves home for college.

Dessen, who also wrote the screenplay with director Sofia Alvarez, shows us that it’s not just Eli that matters to Auden. Some of the film’s best scenes are about Auden’s developing friendship with other girls working at her stepmother’s boutique, played by Genevieve Hannelius, Laura Kariuki and Samia Finnerty. Thankfully, while there are a few awkward adaptation moments, Dessen gracefully sidesteps the overly frequent storylines about mean girls or misunderstandings, and it’s nice to see smart, confident young women supporting each other and enjoying wacky dance breaks. It also offers us a sense of community, connection and tradition reminiscent of Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls, and touches on issues and the importance of helping and asking for help. Most importantly, Auden shows us that opening herself up to understanding her own feelings and taking risks gives her a new understanding of those around her, especially her parents and stepmother. She leaves not as someone else, but as a truer version of herself. There may be nothing new in the message, but that doesn’t mean we don’t need to hear it.

Now I play on Netflix.
