A New ‘League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ Is Coming to Hulu

The game continues again.

Nearly 20 years after Hollywood first tried to turn Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neal into a brilliant comic book series League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in the movies, they’ll try again.

(Also: How 20 years have passed since the first League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie?!? It’s wild.)

Term says 20th Century Studios is a holdover from Fox that made the original League film is working on a concept relaunch specifically for the Hulu streaming service. They don’t have many other details other than the name of the writer working on the script: Justin Haight.

Moore and O’Neill’s comics were sort of like the Justice League of famous Victorian heroes – a literary version of the vast cinematic universe years before it was in the movies. The original cast included Captain Nemo, The Invisible Man, Allan Quatermain, Dr. Jekyll, and Mina Harker from Bram Stoker’s film. Dracula. Film version, director BladeStephen Norrington, was largely true to the concept, but it significantly blunted Moore’s plots and characters – as evidenced by the fact that the film received a «cool» acronym in much of its marketing, which referred to him not as League of Extraordinary Gentlemen but just LXG. The film crew included Dorian Gray and Tom Sawyer.

At least according to legend, filming was such an unpleasant experience for Sean Connery, who plays Allan Quatermain, that it greatly contributed to his decision to retire from acting. In any case, Connery never appeared in any action movie after LXG until his death in October 2020.

The premise has a lot of potential – though if you were to ask me, I’d think it would be more suited to a prestigious TV series than a movie. LXG the film is bad, but how not to be? Very few comic book movies are as literate, smart, complex and mature as Moore and O’Neill comics, especially with the kind of budget you need for the League’s epic scale of world-traveling adventures. The show would have been more suited to the serialized nature of the comics, as well as the fact that Moore and O’Neal had released numerous comic book volumes. League, each of which lends itself to separate seasons. Is not it sound how is the hulu show? It does for me.
